About the Job

The DEIA Manager advances Denver Zoo’s mission and goals by leading efforts across Denver Zoo to ensure our commitments around diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility are upheld in how staff interacts with each other and with the communities we serve. The DEI Manager will facilitate, measure, and build upon the initiatives that support and grow our organizational culture. This position helps creates a safe and inclusive work environment and helps Denver Zoo continue its growth as an organization that reflects the diversity of the communities and peoples we serve.

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead and guide the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) Steering Committee; manage the group’s implementation of DEIA initiatives
  • Manage employee resource groups (ERGs) programming to broader DEIA and engagement efforts to attract and retain talent, and promote an inclusive workplace
  • Infuse knowledge and best practices related to DEIA across the Zoo in all programming, systems, communications, internal culture-building, staff development, and business operations
  • Lead on developing and executing internal staff trainings and team-building activities related to DEIA, as well as volunteer trainings and strategic discussions related to DEIA
  • Stay abreast of advancements and best practices in DEIA, and communicate insights and research with staff
  • Oversee internal communications related to DEIA, and collaborate with External Relations Department on external communications, when appropriate.
  • Manage processes, objectives, actions, tasks, and budgets of DEIA initiatives
  • Develop policies, procedures or actions for the purpose of providing direction in meeting DEIA goals and objectives
  •  Partner with internal evaluation team to develop evaluation programs for DEIA initiatives
  • Collecting and analyzing data to identify patterns and trends, and utilizing data to establish results-oriented diversity initiatives
  • Ensure accurate record keeping for AZA standard requirements
  • Responsible for the intern experience, provide general oversight of daily operations, coordinate trainings sessions and strengthen relationships with colleges & associations to attract a diverse pipeline of early talent into the company
  • Own the recruiting process for interns: requisition management, resume review, screening, slating, interview coordination, and offers
  • Represent Denver Zoo at events enhancing existing relationships and building new connections for adult internship pipeline
  • Collaborate with Director of Equity & Culture on DEIA strategy
  • Advise and serve as a resource for management and staff in the areas of DEIA
  • Participate in organizational strategic planning processes and initiatives
  •  Contribute to, and represent Denver Zoo in, external DEIA networks and partnerships
  • Establish and foster strong working relationships with various human resources personnel and internal stakeholders, ensuring that programs foster an inclusive environment that leads to a highly engaged workforce.
  • Prioritizes the operationalization of organizational core values (Welcoming, Curious, Courageous and Transformative) as part of our DEIA initiatives.
  • Support the Human Resources department with special projects as needed.
  • Perform various duties as assigned.

Skills you need to be successful

  • 2-year degree in human resources or social sciences preferred, or in a related field, or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Requires minimum of 4-years’ experience in performing professional work in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility and group facilitation. Experience working in supervisory role; and with deep knowledge about, and ability to explain and interpret, DEIA concepts, issues, and best practices is required.
  • DEI certification a plus.
  • Experience applying an equitable analysis to all duties to achieve organizational goals and demonstrate the Denver Zoo’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, equity, accessibility and anti-racism preferred.
  • Exceptional project management and event planning experience. Creative, out of the box thinker.
  • Proven computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, and Teams are necessary.
  • Requires superior organizational skills, written and oral communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to prioritize work and tasks.
  • Requires adaptability to produce and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, multi-task and changing environment, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must have good negotiation skills and the ability to handle sensitive information with diplomacy.
  • Must be an outstanding communicator and considered to be a developer of programs who is comfortable working and collaborating with a broad cross section of people in direct and matrixed relationships to drive programs to meet strategic goals.
  • The nature of this position requires safeguarding against the release of confidential and proprietary information of Denver Zoo.
